Family Consumer Science is the new name for the old Home Economics. The name was changed because of all the concepts Family Consumer Science classes teach. The definition of Family Consumer Science is:
The science and art of career planning, job skills, resource management, time management, nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, parenting, substance abuse, child care and development, healthy living, clothing and textiles, consumer education, decision making, problem solving, human relationships, family development, and anything else that touches the home and heart.
Family Consumer Science at Heritage Middle School is both an exploratory class and an elective class. Every sixth grader takes Family Consumer Science 6 as a quarter long class which includes units on cooking, sewing, and babysitting. Seventh graders choose to take Family Consumer Science as an elective which includes a cooking unit, sewing and quilting unit, and food production unit. Eight grade Family Consumer Science corresponds with the Idaho State Curriculum for Young Living. Young Living curriculum includes personal development, family life, cooking, interior desing, clothing design and sewing, cultural, and finance units.
